Sofa Cover Size Calculator United States
This is a practical calculator-style guide for choosing sofa cover size before you order. It is built for real American sofas: compact apartment couches, deep family lounges, chaise sections, loose cushions, backrests and armrests.
Step 1: choose what you are covering
Do not start with “two-seater” or “three-seater”. Start with the surface you want to cover. A sofa can need seat-only coverage, full-seat throw coverage, backrest coverage, armrest coverage or a fitted all-over cover. Each one uses measurements differently.
| You want to cover | Measure this | Typical Decor Cedar direction |
|---|---|---|
| One seat cushion | Seat width and depth | 90x90cm or single-seat piece formats. |
| Two seats | Total two-seat width plus depth | 110x160cm piece or two smaller pieces. |
| Three seats | Total seat width plus depth | 110x240cm piece, three separate pieces or 180x340cm throw-style cover. |
| Chaise seat | Chaise length, usable width and front drop | Start by comparing larger piece sizes such as 110x240cm. |
| Backrest or armrest | Panel width and height/drop | 90x90cm pieces or dedicated back/side-rest options. |
Step 2: use the measurement formula
For seat pieces: measure the area you sit on, then choose a cover that gives enough allowance to sit flat and tuck lightly. If the piece is exactly the same size as the cushion, it may look tight once someone sits down.
For throw-style covers: measure the full span you want to cover from side to side, then measure front-to-back depth. Choose a larger format when you want the cover to fall softly over the front edge or arms.
For stretch covers: measure outside arm to outside arm, back height and seat depth, then compare with the product's size range. Do not size down just to make it look tighter. Stretch fabric under too much tension usually pops out or strains around the arms.
Calculator examples
Compact two-seater
One 110x160cm piece can work when the sofa has one long seat area. Two 90x90cm pieces can work better when the cushions are separate.
Three-seater family sofa
Compare 110x240cm for seat-focused coverage or 180x340cm when the whole seating area needs a softer draped layer.
Chaise living room
Measure the chaise as its own zone. Use a larger piece for the chaise, then add separate pieces for regular seats if the sofa needs visual balance.
If pets use only one part of the sofa, measure that part first. If the sofa looks tired overall, measure the whole visible seat span and compare larger throw-style covers.
Measurement worksheet
Write the measurements down in this order before browsing products. First, measure the total sofa width from outside arm to outside arm. Second, measure the sitting width between the arms. Third, measure seat depth from the front edge to the back cushion. Fourth, measure the height of the back cushion or back panel if that area needs coverage. Fifth, measure arm width and arm drop only if the arms need protection.
For chaise sofas, add two extra numbers: chaise length from the back cushion to the front edge, and chaise usable width from the inside arm or open side to the cushion line. These two numbers matter more than the sofa's seat count because the chaise is usually the deepest and most-used part of the living room.
| Measurement | Use it for | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Outside width | Fitted and stretch covers. | Measuring only the cushions and forgetting arms. |
| Sitting width | Seat pieces and cushion protectors. | Including arm width when the arms will stay uncovered. |
| Seat depth | Front drop, tucking and chaise planning. | Choosing a cover that stops before the landing edge. |
| Back height | Backrest pieces and full visual refreshes. | Covering seats only, then noticing old back cushions look exposed. |
| Arm width/drop | Side-rest and arm protection. | Buying arm pieces for arms nobody uses. |
American sofa sizing mistakes to avoid
The first mistake is assuming every three-seater is the same. Some three-seaters are compact apartment sofas; others are deep family lounges with oversized cushions. The second mistake is ignoring arms. Wide arms can make a fitted cover harder, while narrow arms may not need covering at all.
The third mistake is forgetting back cushions. If the back cushions are loose and visible, seat-only coverage may make them look older by contrast. If the sofa sits against a wall and the backs are barely seen, seat-only coverage may be enough.
The fourth mistake is buying too small. A slightly generous piece can be styled, tucked or draped. A piece that is too small usually looks accidental.
How to choose between two close sizes
When two sizes seem possible, think about movement. If the sofa gets heavy daily use, choose the size that gives more stable coverage and enough fabric to stay in place. If the sofa is mainly decorative or used lightly, a closer fit can look cleaner.
For seat pieces and throw-style covers, slightly more coverage is often safer than slightly less. Extra fabric can be tucked, folded or allowed to drape. Too little fabric exposes the cushion edge and makes the cover look like it does not belong. For stretch covers, the opposite can be true: too much spare fabric can bag, while too little fabric strains. That is why stretch covers should stay within the intended size range rather than being guessed from seat count alone.
If you are buying for pets, choose the size that protects the entry path onto the sofa. Dogs often mark the front edge first. Cats often use the backrest or favorite corner. A calculator only works when it follows the way the sofa is actually used.

Quick answers
How do I calculate sofa cover size?
Measure the seat width, seat depth, back height, arm width and any chaise length. Then choose the cover type: seat piece, full throw cover or fitted stretch cover.
What size cover do I need for a three-seater?
For seat-piece coverage, compare 110x240cm or three individual pieces. For a larger relaxed layer, compare 180x340cm or similar three-seater throw-style options.
What size cover do I need for a chaise?
Measure the chaise length and usable width separately. A long chaise often needs a larger piece such as 110x240cm, but the exact choice depends on cushion depth and front drop.
Should I add extra fabric allowance?
Yes for throw and piece-based covers. A little extra fabric can tuck or drape neatly. For stretch covers, stay inside the product's intended size range.
